Recently I crossed paths with two young, idealistic people who could not help but inspire our leaders to make ethical decisions on climate change. Their voices need to be heard. I made the acquaintance of a 16 year old environmentalist on twitter, @Irishclover7 who challenged me to respond what is my wish? Upon checking into her blog I soon realized that she personifies my greatest hope for saving the world. From my experience as a teacher, with adult boards and school leadership I know that nothing holds adults accountable for their words and deeds like kids, and rightly so. This post is a tribute to young adults like @Irishclover7 who are taking responsibility to lead the way on environmental issues and hold the rest of us accountable for the decisions we make.
Another young leader, Shai Agassi says we need to take climate change to zero, during this presidential term. He relates a story that Bobby Kennedy told him recently about slavery in the UK 200 years ago. Someone in Parliament proposed abolishing slavery. Opponents said, "We can't do it quickly, it will take time." Within a year of abolishing slavery the industrial revolution began. We are in a similar position with our fossil fuel addiction. Opponents believing that we cannot do this quickly and we need time. What awaits us once we finally move beyond a fossil fuel economy?
